K&L Notes

Chateau de la Negly represents the pinnacle of production in the La Clape region of Languedoc. Jeb Dunnuck of the Wine Advocate writes that the wines of Chateau de la Negly "are hard to find in the marketplace, but they're singular, world class efforts worth the extra effort to track down." We were excited when this producer approached us to begin a direct relationship with them. The "La Falaise" is the flagship wine that this winery built its reputation on. It represents the classic qualities of the "La Clape" appellation with its blend of 50% Syrah, 40% Grenache and 10% Mourvedre. Vinified in a mix of wood tanks and concrete it is loaded with aromas of raspberry, blackberry and Provencal herbs and olive tapenade. It has sweet fruit on the palate and a long supple finish. Don't miss what has become one of the new benchmarks of this region. (Keith Mabry, K&L Wine Merchants)

About two years ago, Chateau de la Negly approached us about working directly with them in the state of California. Not wanting to sound too excited, I proposed some samples be sent along to "review" the wines and see if they "fit" our portfolio. Having tasted the wines several times over the years when they were handled by other importers, I already knew that this was a coup for us. The wines were always awesome with purity of quality and tons of critical accolades. The 2014s arrived and they were to say the least, spectacular! Full of depth and concentration, they fit that niche of our program. Now, this winery has been on Jeb Dunnuck's (of the Wine Advocate) short list because their "ICON" wines, like the Porte du Ciel and Clos de la Truffiere have received some of the best reviews of any southern French reds. We quickly brokered the deal and the 2014s La Cote and La Falaise arrived and quickly sold out. The '14 La Cote was so delicious and so reasonably priced, we went back for more. Alas, the Falaise was sold out but we did get a slug of more La Cote. Now, flash forward to earlier this year (2016) and I knew the 2015 La Falaise was going to be a rockstar. An exceptional year with near perfect ripening conditions, how could we go wrong? Of course we didn't. Having tasted the wine several times now, it is a beautiful red with saturated black and blue fruit. Never to heavy, its layers of spices and minerality bring a healthy dose of intrigue. This is not shy nor is it over-the-top. It strikes the perfect balance of well-fruited and complex. Of course, our wait has paid off now and as predicted, the wine received its best review ever. So with a heavy heart, I say now, stock up because, this will likely be it for the 2015. (Fear not though, 2016 is shaping up to be pretty awesome too!)
