Tasting Notes

In 1973, Daniel Dugois bought 2 hectares of vineyards and a house equipped with wine cellars in a village called Les Arsures, where he was born. He cultivated the vineyard and sold his production primarily to Henri Maire, one of the most prominent producers in Jura at that time. In 1982, Daniel made his first harvest in his own cellars and began to sell his wines to consumers. His first ever harvest earned him his first Gold Medal for his Chardonnay at the Jura Wine Contest. Daniel and his wife Monique have continued to work on the quality of their wines and their efforts have since been recognized in many wine contests and guidebook reviews. In 2003, their son Philippe returned to the estate to lend a hand in the winemaking and in 2013 he took charge of the vineyard. The Ploussard is planted on red clay over red marl. Grapes are hand harvested and native yeasts are used during fermentation. The grapes are destemmed and the wine is aged in primarily used oak barrels for 8 months. The Ploussard has aromas of redcurrant, raspberry and Indian spices. It makes a great aperitif but as a more medium bodied red shows best when paired with food. Try it with charcuterie, pates, pork and fondue.

Ploussard is a little known varietal from the Jura that is light and elegant but provides so much character. This is a varietal the deserves more attention. It's lighter than Pinot but full of character. The nose has aromas of bramble, tea leaf, smoke and spices. The palate provides flavors of crunchy fruits like cranberry intertwined with savory, meaty components. It is bright and lifted but has game and earth too. It's beautiful with a slight chill on it as well. Next time you're looking for a light red, skip Pinot and impress your friends with Dugois Ploussard.

Customers frequently ask me what my favorite wine in the store is. I enjoy a variety of styles from different countries, plus it all depends on what I'm eating, who I'm with, and what kind of mood I'm in. The truth is, I don't have one... until now! I simply cannot get enough of this wine. As soon as the bottle is popped open you're smacked with an infinite bouquet of just-picked wild strawberries and raspberries. The palate is a mouthful of said berries with some red currant and a touch of white pepper and minerals on the finish. This is such a tasty little bottle of wine I unknowingly consumed three quarters of the bottle in one sitting, sans buzz. The ABV is only 13% and this is a lighter style of red so a slight chill would do it just fine. I love this wine - it's light, fresh, frolicsome and absolutely delicious!
