Allen Meadows - Burghound
*Sweet Spot, Outstanding* This is more deeply pitched still with its notes of plum, leather, black cherry, newly turned earth and smoked meat hints. The succulent, rich and seductive broad-shouldered flavors manage to at once be juicy yet serious as the firm tannic spine that emerges on the gorgeously long finish makes very clear. Excellent.
Medium red. Lively perfume of raspberry, spices and dried flowers complicated by leather and soil tones. Supple on entry, then quite backward--in fact almost austere--in the middle palate, less open to inspection today than the Champeaux. Conveys a touch of rusticity to its flavors of leather, spices, earth and minerals. This classically dry wine will need at least five or six years in the cellar to uncoil. 92+ points. (ST)
Domaine Fourrier is a Burgundy wine estate based in Gevrey-Chambertin on the Côte d'Or. The wines, mostly made from Pinot Noir, are highly sought after and known for their silky finesse. Jean-Marie Fourrier took over his family estate in 1994, aged just 23. He worked with the legendary Henri Jayer in Vosne-Romanée in the late 1980s. The latter's influence is reflected in the domaine's fastidious approach in the vineyard and minimal intervention in the winery. Following in the manner of Henri Jayer, grapes are destemmed very carefully and are not crushed before fermentation, limiting extraction of color and tannins from the skin. Natural yeasts are used and punch-downs are done by hand. Fourrier's wines are aged for around 16-20 months, usually with just a small portion of new oak, and the wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered.
