Amaro Angeleno is LA's answer to the exploding Amaro scene. The Italian culture of drinking bitter liqueurs is centuries old. Since at least the early 1700s, distillers across the Apennine peninsula have carefully guarded their secret recipes, usually traced back to some famous monastery, often promising good health, strong loins, or long life. Using both local and exotic ingredients they created something truly unique to that place. In that image, Amaro Angeleno was created to be a true product of terroir, inspired by those that came before, but distinct from any other Amaro on the market. A true Amaro of place, Angeleno is not a recreation of any Italian style Amaro, but instead a function of its own local culture and tradition. The proprietary process involves distilling local wine, hand harvesting fresh herbs from local farms, selecting the finest exotic botanicals, fresh Southern California grown oranges and a bit of magic to create a totally new style of Amaro. The versatile Angeleno can be chilled and consumed straight up before dinner with a twist of lemon, mixed in place of a vermouth or aperitif wine, or savored slowly at room temperature after a long meal. It's is a complex mix of powerful citrus, soft herbal aromas, ripe fruit and bitter roots. It's not dark like most Amaro as no color additives are used so all you'll see is the soft glow of wine, spirit, and botanicals steeped together for several weeks before being lightly filtered, rested and bottled by hand.

Angeleno is the hotness right now. It's not your grandma's amaro though so don't expect the sweet easy richness of Averna or the mellow bitter qualities of Nonino. Instead, the boys at Angeleno have created something distinctly Californian, not in the mold of any Italian Amaro, but with a great respect for those venerable products. The secret recipe includes locally sourced fresh and dried botanicals, many hand picked at a local farm. The base spirit is distilled from Pinot Grigio and a multi-step maceration and blending process before filtration and resting. The unusual concoction has a huge orange element, pointed with powerful herbal aromas, in particular chamomile and gentian. On the palate it starts a bit vinous and zippy sweet before the bitter orange peel and gentian peel pull it back. As you sip the bitterness builds. Very effective as a digestive, but works wonders in aperitif, as Spritz or even can sub-out orange liqueur or Lillet when you want to dry up or spice up a classic recipe. This is a modern classic in every sense of the word and will likely be everywhere before you know it.

This is a wonderful and lively amaro. It will be great before dinner or as a nice pick up me in the afternoon. The Amaro Angeleno has bright and inviting orange and lemon aromas and flavors. It finishes with a hint of bitter that helps make this product so refreshing.
