This rather unique wine (made from Mencía) is at the vanguard of the Bierzo revival. It's earthy and leafy, with aromas of red plums and natural spice. The mouthfeel is perfect, as it's just lush and firm enough. Nearly explodes in the mouth, with fine French oak softening the blow. (MS)
The 2001 Corullon exhibits a deep ruby/purple-tinged color as well as a subtle, restrained, intellectually satisfying bouquet of crushed stones, white flowers, and blue as well as black fruits. Tightly-knit, with crisp acidity, hints of licorice and blueberries, medium body, and a crisp, vigorous yet refreshing finish. (RP)
(all of these wines are made from 100% Mencia, planted on vineyards around the town of Corullon; I tasted final blends just prior to bottling) Good medium ruby. Pungent, cool aromas of black cherry, licorice, bitter chocolate and fresh herbs. Juicy, firm and on the lean side, with slightly tart-edged berry flavors and edgy acidity. Made from parcels owned by Alvaro Palacios and Ricardo Perez, and purchased fruit. (ST)
Plum and spicy flavors shine through this plump red, accented with earth and mineral notes. It has a lovely lightness on the palate, but with enough tannin for grip. (TM)
