K&L Notes

Blanc de blancs from Bouzy? Yes--and what a blanc de blancs it is! This single-varietal, single-vineyard, single-harvest Champagne comes entirely from the Les Motellettes parcel which was planted in 1961. Quentin Paillard, his brother and his father all wanted to make terroir Champagne from their best, oldest plots--the very plots that they use to propagate the massale selections for the rest of their vineyard. This Chardonnay has understated power and is perhaps the most subtle, complex young Champagne that I have ever had. We only managed to get 3 cases of this great Champagne, so don't hesitate if you would like some! (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne Buyer)

The 2010 Pierre Paillard "Les Mottelettes" Blanc de Blancs comes from the Paillard's mother plot of chardonnay that was planted in 1961. This bone dry, chalk laden wine is usually a laser beam, and I love it with oysters. In 2010, it has an extra element that almost reminds me of the subtle pineapple character that you get in the best Meursault. With the terroir-driven aspects Paillard is showcasing in these wines, anyone who loves both Champagne and Burgundy would do well to drink one of these!
