Tasting Notes

Château de la Charrière is one of our most popular direct import producers and a label that easily represents the best bang for your buck we carry in Burgundy. Formerly run by Yves Girardin, the business is now run by his young son Benoit, who definitely has modernized the winemaking a bit since his first vintage in 2011. Whereas the wines were a bit funky and rustic previously, the past few vintages are much cleaner; showcasing the pureness of the pinot noir by de-stemming completely so as to remove tannic structure. The 2015 vintage represents their best wines to date, in our opinion.

Fun and versatile. Talk about a Burgundy party wine in a bottle! This is a soft, easy-drinking, juicy expression, dominated by ripe red cherry aromas. Think cherry cola—refreshing, delicious and a total bargain!

Chateau de la Charriere never disappoints. The 2015 vintage has resulted in an abundance of red berries, a slightly earthier component than the Bourgogne Rouge (which sold out quickly!) some black currant notes and smooth as silk tannins. Fresh, balanced and very easy to drink, I suspect this one will sell out too, especially at this price.

Since 2011, when the new generation took over at Charriere, the wines at the chateau have become cleaner, fresher, and more concentrated with ripe fruit flavor. They're de-stemming more of the fruit, which is lessening the funkier, earthier notes, and enhancing more of the juiciness of their fantastic pinot noir grapes. 2015 in particular is a benchmark year for Charriere, and it's one that will truly highlight just how good of a deal our import program is providing. The Hautes Cotes de Beaune expression is made from 60-70 year old vines, has gobs of red cherry flavor, and is absolutely delicious from front to back. You're getting true Burgundian character from a great vintage for less than twenty bucks. With the 2016 frost vintage looming around the corner, I'd recommend loading up big here.

For those of you who enjoyed his Bourgogne Pinot Noir we had earlier in the year, this is a similar styled wine with just with a bit more complexity and depth. Despite its price, this wine comes from vines that average 60 years old. Very bright high-toned fruit with lots of red cherry and strawberry flavors, which are followed by a crunchy, spicy finish!
