Tasting Notes

In 2006, when brothers Charles and Andy Nelson visited their great-great-great grandfather's old distillery, now preserved by the Greenbrier Historical Society in the Tennessee town of the same name, they had what might be described as a spiritual awakening. Both brothers are proud southern gentlemen, with a reverence for their family history and that of their home. Their love of Tennessee, whiskey and history came together in this special place to produce what can only be described as an epiphany. Their path forward seemed clear: they would recreate the special whiskies of their forefathers and renew the Green Brier reputation that had made the Nelson name ubiquitous with great whiskey. Indeed, Nelson's Green Brier is one of the few craft distilleries with an actual family history of distilling and bottling Tennessee whiskey. Their mission was clear, but not taken lightly, and indeed they've been very deliberate and thoughtful in achieving that goal. After years of research and planning, the brothers broke ground on a new distillery and began buying whiskey from the excellent MGP, Indiana. Using their grandfather's old merchant label they re-launched Green Brier's Belle Meade Bourbon brand and now have some of the oldest stocks of bourbon of any craft distillery around. Smooth Ambler and High West both source their whiskey from this same distillery, but neither of them will sell us 10 Year Old Cask Strength Single Barrel Bourbon any longer. Only 126 bottles in this cask.

This bottling offers a lot of bourbon. It is big and lusty with full bodied mouth filling flavors. It is not shy but is sweet and rich with a long finish. It starts off with with pretty caramel and honey aromas that are complemented with subtle floral notes. An exciting single cask that should not last long in inventory.

Lovely sweet nose that brings you caramel, toffee and ripe stone fruit. This barrel is softer than its sister and carries more butterscotch and canned fruit without getting into a pepper or salty profile. Less spicy and more creamy this bottle nevertheless still gives off plenty of character with some tea and tobacco notes to balance the richness.

Barrel Number #2525 is definitely the brighter of the two Belle Meade Casks. It doesn’t have the savory or sour quality that we sometimes get with MGP whiskey, instead a big nose burnt sugar, sweet tea, over ripe mango and dried flowers. The palate is not as sweet as the nose might suggest medium bodied with a deep dark red cherry on the entry. The tea component takes hold mid-palate for a lovely dry spicy finish. With a bit of air this exquisite whiskey takes on some truly old-school character, developing red fruit, black tea, tobacco leaf and exotic wood components. I have no doubt that this will be remembered as one of the year’s best finds.
