The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford Reserve is 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petite Verdot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Merlot. It is a terrific example of Rutherford viticulture, with loads of kirsch liqueur, crème de cassis, dusty, loamy soil undertones, spice box and Christmas fruitcake. It is dense ruby/purple in color and full-bodied, with sweet, supple tannins. Among all the Reserves from Frank Family Vineyards, this seems to be the most precocious and easiest to drink at present. It certainly has 20 years of upside to it. This is a beauty and another impressive offering. (RP)
The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford Reserve is super-expressive today. Raspberry jam, mocha, plums and dark spices flesh out in a forward, opulent wine with tons of immediacy, especially for the year. Polished, silky tannins only add to the wine's allure. The Rutherford Reserve is a surprisingly open, succulent Cabernet that can be enjoyed upon release. (AG)
This tremendous red wine is robustly aromatic, layering its black currant, dark cherry and chocolate scents with dusty sage and cedar. Luxuriously textured and smooth, it finishes focused and direct, with a lift of welcome acidity and complexity. (VB)
This shows rich fruit with fascinating blackberry, tile dust and stone character as well. Full body, silky tannins and a savory finish.
A rugged style, with dense earth, gravel, graphite, berry and cedar flavors that give this a distinctive presence. The tannins are dense and extracted, but the slow-emerging dark berry fruit is captivating. Drink now through 2028. (JL)
Although its deep, solidly fruited and lavishly oaked aromas intimate a certain youthful tightness, this wine surprises a bit with very ripe, wide-open, decidedly showy flavors that are not in the least reserved and leave little to the imagination. It is full-bodied and fleshy with richness to spare, and if buttressed by ample varietal tannins, it is nowhere near as tough as young Cabernet can be. It is, in fact, so abundantly fruity that it is bound to tempt early drinking, but it is impressively extracted and sufficiently well-structured to pay real dividends to those with the patience to lay it away for another five or six years. *Two Stars*
