In the same qualitative ballpark as the Côte Rozier, yet possessing more elegance, the 2015 Côte Rôtie La Brocadre (95% Syrah and 5% Viognier, mostly destemmed and aged in new barrels) offers lots of raspberry and black raspberry notes, as well as new saddle leather, cassis, toasted spice and dried flowers. Full-bodied, pure, layered and downright silky, it’s a brilliant wine that will have two decades of longevity. This was a sensational lineup of wines from Côte Rôtie-based Christophe Billon. (JD)
Brilliant violet. Ripe cherry and boysenberry aromas are complemented by suggestions of smoky minerals, candied flowers and olive. Pliant red/blue fruit flavors show good depth and focus, and licorice and cracked pepper nuances build as the wine opens up. Blends power and vivacity on a long, penetrating finish that features building tannins and lingering floral, olive and smoky mineral notes. (JR)
