The best of the 2012 trio, and that’s saying something as they’re all impressive, is the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard. This one exhibits more minerality and lots of spring flowers in addition to blueberry, blackberry and dark raspberry fruit. It is loaded, full-bodied and opulent, with voluptuous texture and terrific purity, power of presence and length. This is a stunner from winemaker Mike Smith. Drink it over the next decade or more. Quivet's 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Las Piedras is one of the silkier more polished wines readers will come across from Las Piedras. Here the fruit is supple, radiant and quite open, with fewer of the mineral/savory notes that are typical of this rocky St. Helena site. Because Quivet only gets a small amount of fruit from Las Piedras, Mike Smith fermented the 2012 in a plastic T bin, where extractions are naturally going to be gentler than what could be achieved in tank.
