If there was one visit during our travels in Italy in 2016 where I stopped taking notes, it was at the Baricci Estate. They are not only one of my favorite Montalcino producers, but also their wines are among the finest examples of Sangiovese from this storied region. Their 2015 Rosso could almost be mistaken for a Brunello and it's a prime example of how great the 2015 vintage is to Montalcino. It's full, expressive and one of the best Rossos of 2015.

The long awaited 2015 Rosso from Baricci has finally landed! And since it did JUST arrive, when I first opened the bottle it was a little shaken and unsure, but giving it about two hours to breath it really came into its own. An impressive nose of rich cherry fruit and skins, lots of dry spice and fresh flowers leads into a juicy yet structured wine. The great thing about 2015, is the unbelievably ripe fruit character it gives to the wines without steering away from the formidable acidity Sangiovese is known for. The full body of this Rosso shows its impressive aging potential while the dense, deep fruit allows for enjoyment now. Get yourself a few bottles and watch this wine progress!

This spectacular rosso has the scale, power and structure of great young Brunello! It is hard to believe that this fabulously focused and full bodied sangiovese is priced so low. I love the earthy aromas that frame the core of high quality fruit here, as well as the bright acid that lifts the firm tannic structure. This has serious class, and will go the distance in the cellar, if you can keep your hands off of it- it just tastes too darn good right now to resist!

Most of the 2015 “Rosso’s have come and gone by now, but we save a few of our favorites to carry us into 2018.Woo-hoo! Baricci’s is back in town! Ever time I raise a glass of this wine to my lips; it brings me back to Montaclino. Why? because there is so much Montaclino in the glass. This Rosso reveals perfumed ripe fruit of plum, cassis and kirsch, some leather and cassis, mid- pallet and earthiness that meld into ripe strawberries, spices and minerals on the long finish. ( Warning !!! this will sell out quickly and yes, I am going to put some down).

I Love Baricci Rosso di Montalcino, but not as much as longtime K&L employee Jim Barr did, Jim passed away last month but he was the #1 Fan of Baricci Rosso di Montalcino. Jim would hound me every year for an arrival date he was always so anxious, I had told Jim how good the 2015 was it truly saddens me to think that he missed this 2015 vintage which for me is the winery’s most impressive Rosso to date. I’ve thought a lot about Jim lately and I thought for this review I’d like to post what he wrote about Baricci Rosso di Montalcino….Cheers Jim For decades, now, I have been regularly advising customers who collect and maintain a wine cellar collection to keep records of what is in that collection. It is wise and creates less frustration, particularly if you ever need to stay on top of what needs to be drunk now or, if damaged, information for any insurance company. And, I have been, over that time, thanked by many of you who have done this. Welllll, can you deduce who has essentially seldom, if at all, done this during the last four decades? If you conjured up a belief that it might be Jim Barr, you have hit the nail on the head! Several months ago, I decided that I really needed to deal with this "problem," and as quickly as possible since I turn 69 in a few months and I was looking at around 200 cases+/- in my temperature control wine room. And, I am still collecting and making the stuff. As my wife, Christine, keeps telling me, "We’ll never be able to drink all of this." I have constantly pointed out to her that when the time comes (she is much younger than I am), call K&L and sell to them whatever you don't want. As I have been organizing and doing neck labels four weeks, I have come across some stunning wines that I have forgotten about as well as wines that should have been consumed twenty-plus years ago. One of the wines that I discovered several weeks ago was half a case of the 2006 Baricci Rosso di Montalcino, one of the first vintages that Greg St.Clair started importing from this small estate. My immediate reaction was that this wine, which was absolutely gorgeous in 2008 at release, would be way past its prime today. I opened a bottle that night and was totally blown away by how amazingly great this wine had become – it was aged Brunello at its best. The 2014 reminds me of that young 2006, with a lovely, medium-deep ruby color with a pinkish rim, the nose is opulent showing distinctive scents of violets, plum, blackberry, and anise fruit with a noticeable cedary to forest floor undertone, all of which carries over to a broad, balanced, viscous, complex set of flavors. The finish with this Gem is deep, long and warm, and, although will age as long as the 2006, it drinks great right now. AN AMAZING VALUE! >>>A K&L WINE MERCHANTS' DIRECT IMPORT<<< ***** 13.5% ***** Drink from 2017 to 2025
    Drink from 2018 to 2030
