The region of Manduria is known for it's hot and dry weather which creates juicy and opulent primitivos. The regional influence mixed with the slightly cooler growing season in 2014 gives this juicy wine more balance and subtlety than expected. The Antica Masseria vineyards are planted on limestone and clay, unusual for the area, which adds complexity and minerality to the softly structured wine. Full of bold purple fruit flavors with the decadence we come love in primitivos and the more balanced acidity mixes together for an integrated and approachable glass of wine.

Primitivo from Manduria is usually too sweet for me, lacks a bit of acidity and can often be flabby but this wine is Rockin! The nose of this wine is stunningly complex, a vibrant blend of spice, fruit and earth that booms from your glass. On the palate the wine has structure, tannin and acidity that combine with the wine’s richness to give a really focused, long and dynamic palate feel. The flavors are incredible, spiced fruit compote, leather, with enough richness to give one the impression of weight and density but with lift in the finish. Try this beauty with braised or stewed meats and aged cheeses.

We receive numerous requests for Primitivo but in our attempt to source excellent, value priced ones the options have been few. Thankfully the 2014 Antica Masseria not only delivers but offers a California style ripeness combined with rich baked fruit flavors. It's a concentrated blend of sun soaked black cherry and mulberry flavors with additional hints of mocha throughout. This one's for those who love big, mouth-filling Zins and riper style fruit-driven wines. Fire up the grill and bring on the BBQ.

Reminiscent of a classic Amador county zinfandel, which is appropriate as Primitivo is the progenitor to our California zinfandels, this wine evokes deep berry flavors, roasted figs and Medjool dates on the palate with hints of brushy herbs and savory spices. The Italian sensibility shows through with nice acidity keeping the wine focused and on point. I can think of nothing better than a little osso bucco to go with this juicy hearty red.
