K&L Notes

TWR has become a perennial favorite with our staff - it's what we drink with our friends and families. The wine's incredible purity, balance and depth are unmatched in this price point. It also doesn't hurt to know that the family behind the TWR wines (the Flowerdays) are some of the most dedicated, passionate, talented and flat-out lovely people I know! The Pinot is sourced from two small blocks in Renwick and Omaka, Marlborough. Fruit is hand-sorted, mostly de-stemmed and then re-sorted by the individual grape (yes, seriously). Fermented in small, one ton open tanks, matured in fine-grain French oak for 11 months (30% new). It is fragrant, pure, silky and enchanting - everything you want in Pinot. Previous vintages of TWR Pinots that we have brought in have been excellent productions that show some real classic Pinot characteristics bordering on a cross between a really nice Pommard from Burgundy and some “new-world” qualities without going over the top. But, this 2015 production has kicked up those wonderful qualities of their previous productions threefold to a level that is absolutely superb. Medium-deep ruby in color, the opulent nose is loaded with lush floral fruit notes {rose petals to violets}, black cherry to ripe strawberry to blueberry tones, that is reinforced by creamy to wet river stone mineral qualities. In its complex, silky smooth, rich palate, this exceptional Gem is balanced, elegant, fleshy, and well-structured, has a viscous mid-range, all of which leads to a long, succulent, juicy finish that seems to go on and on, and it is only 13.0% ABV {???}. This is great New Zealand Pinot, and Rusty has ordered me to bring home cases of this exceptional Gem for our consumption over the next seven to ten years. A GREAT VALUE!!!” …..A K&L WINE MERCHANTS’ DIRECT IMPORT ***** 13.0% ABV *****

Poise, precision and purity - these are the words that immediately come to mind upon tasting this wonderful Pinot Noir. TWR's Pinots are a bit shy upon immediate release, but always pickup steam to reveal their lovely character. Notes of exotic spice and dark red fruit lead to palate of great complexity. This wine is tasting brilliant now, but will continue to evolve.

This is a very serious Pinot Noir and its complexity rivals that of many $70 Pinot Noirs. The fact that 2015 was a very small, concentrated vintage really is showcased in this wine with layers of flavor unveiling with every sip. The team at TWR care deeply about their wines and how they are farmed and aim to create wines of true place and substance rather than a pretty label. If you're looking for an authentic NZ Pinot, look no further. These guys are putting Marlborough on the the map for stunning, premium Pinot Noir.

My favorite wines of our very strong New Zealand direct import program are from TWR. The 2015 Te Whare Ra Pinot Noir is full of dark cherry fruit and vinous, savory drive. If you like complexity in your Pinot, this medium bodied, long finishing bottle is a must try.

Very enticing Pinot. The aromatics Range from bright berries to dark cherries with spice, earth and herbal nuances. It is medium light bodied but with substance, round mouthfeel, sizable but soft tannins pull everything together and let you know that patience will be rewarded, but that dark fruit and rich texture temp you into drinking it all now.

Every year I review the new TWR Pinot Noir and attempt to put into words why this wine stuns with every vintage. Perhaps its because this lovely Pinot Noir sits at the juncture of several styles, incorporating boisterous fruit, elegant tannin and acidity, clean purity, and savory spice notes into one wine. Or perhaps it is the fact that this wine drinks beautifully now, yet has the potential to age nobly, or that it drinks perfectly on its own, yet pairs with a variety of foods. In any case, we have another great vintage in stock, and I'd highly recommend picking up a case or two.
