A dense and rich cabernet with masses of fruit and juicy tannins. Blackberry, walnut, and light prune character. Flavorful and high-toned aftertaste. Drink in 2018.
A tank sample of the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa looks potentially outstanding. This will be aged 18 months in a combination of French and American oak and exhibits plenty of crunchy blackberry and cassis fruit with hints of cedar wood and vanillin. It is ripe, exuberant, and quite impressive. Interestingly, the final blend was 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Petite Sirah and the rest Petit Verdot, Merlot and Zinfandel. It should drink well for 15+ years. This winery was created in 1933 (following Prohibition) by the Martini family. They are still heavily involved, but the property was eventually sold to friends of the Martinis, the Gallos, although Mike Martini still runs the operation. These wines are iconic, given that fact that the Martinis have long been custodians of an extraordinary vineyard site in Sonoma, the Monte Rosso Vineyard, which was first planted in 1890. (RP)
This well-made wine offers great value for the appellation, elegant in dusty cedar and pencil shavings, the fruit subdued and approachable. Full bodied, it remains balanced in the glass, its oak profile nicely kept in check. (VB)
A wholesome expression of earth- and graphite-driven Cabernet, commingling with road tar, roasted herb and dark berry flavors. Crushed rock minerality enlivens the finish. Drink now through 2024. (JL)
Every so often an unexpected and eye-opening wine comes along that defies every expectation relative to its cost, and this one is just that and more. It hits all of the right varietal marks smartly and sports an absolute wealth of continuous, very pure, blackcurrant fruit at its heart. It is firm, yet refined and gracefully balanced with nary a hint of extraneous ripeness or fat, and, if tightening up at the finish as young Cabernet should, it stays in keen focus and shows striking length. Discerning Cabernet drinkers should take notice. *Good Value, One Star*
