A juicy and fruity red that shows reserve and structure. Full body, polished and chewy tannins and a long finish. Big wine for the vintage. Serious... again!
The 2016 La Cabanne is a blend of 94% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc picked from the end of September. François Estager told me that like last year, he did not add any sulphites until after the malolactic fermentation. It has a well-defined bouquet with black cherries, a touch of cassis, a lovely marine influence and crushed violets. It opens beautifully in the glass. The palate is fresh on the entry with crisp, tensile tannin and very well-judged acidity. This Pomerol displays great energy and poise, fanning out on the second half that demonstrates superb mineralité. This is an unmissable follow-up to the 2015 La Cabanne. Tasted twice with consistent notes. (NM)
Beautiful deep damson colour, as so many are this year. The fruit veers towards the sweet side, with sticky summer damson jam and a welcome touch of bitter chocolate and grilled plums. It is powerful, and although there is not quite the same lift as some, there is no doubt about the luscious fruit. Medium term drinking. Merlot with a touch of Cabernet Franc. (JA)
This has a soft-edged core of plum and red currant preserve flavors lined with subtle alder and singed vanilla notes. A touch dusty through the finish, but the fruit is pretty. (JM, Web only-2017)
Big and bold with pinched sweetness on the end but a neat, dry finish. 16/20
