The inky-colored 2013 Vranac Special Selection (100% Vranac, which is the local grape of Macedonia) offers upfront, voluptuous levels of black raspberry, plum, violets and spring flowers. Full-bodied, decadent and a borderline big fruit bomb, it nevertheless has fabulous purity of fruit and good freshness. It’s a smoking value to drink over the coming 2-4 years (although I have no experience with how this grape ages). Coming from Macedonia and under the guidance of Philippe Cambie, Tikves continues to produce high quality, value priced wines that over deliver. (JD)
Black like elderberry juice. Both red and dark fruit. Lovely varietal expression with dry, firm tannins and fresh acidity, alcohol tastes moderate. Dry finish and not overly tamed – shows Vranec in a sophisticated and true style. Chewy and genuine but not rustic. Great stuff. (JH)
Tikves is the name of a region and its oldest winery, founded in 1885. Its Vranec is sweet and smooth, with plenty of earthy purple fruit to match spicy sausages.
