K&L Notes

This classic Sezanne Champagne is composed of 96% Chardonnay and 4% Pinot Noir aged over 8 years on the lees. It is dosed at under 8g/l and all stainlees steel fermented. This is a classic 2008, with fantastic drive, length and minerality, and should age very well if you can keep your hands off of it! (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne Buyer)

Bright and poised pear, apple and lemon zest fruit flavors with a voluptuous mid-palate texture and just a hint of red fruit from the Pinot Noir on the back end. The acidity, like every vintage 2008 Champagne I’ve had so far, is electric and stimulating, amplifying the fruit flavors for an almost never-ending finish. Incredible value from this grower champagne from what is quickly becoming a legendary vintage. Amazing value on an '08 vintage champagne!

My absolute favorite Le Brun to date! The 2008 Grand Vintage utilizes 96% Chardonnay and 4% Pinot Noir. Why are the proportions like this? I have no idea what the method is behind the madness, but whatever it is - it works like magic. I pick up layers of green apple and yellow apple along with Meyer lemon and decadent brioche bread. The palate offers up spice and excellent toastiness from the oak, chalky goodness, and then there's an elegant floral quality that carries throughout. This is an ideal celebration Champagne.

A zippy, tight bottle of bubbles, the "Grand Vintage," was enjoyable drinking now but begs to be aged to really open up the teasing meringue and panna cotta living now under the high acid that will round out over time even more. Clean as anything, this almost blanc de blanc has all the chalkiness you'd expect, but a bit more heft that usual, especially for how liner it is, which was really intriguing.

I have an update on the current release of this champagne. More Chardonnay at 96% now and it seems to be fresher. What a great year and what a great champagne! Most 2008 champagnes are wonderful. Not very many are $39.99. If you are a Blanc de Blancs fan, you're love this one. The label doesn't say Blanc de Blancs, but it's 94% Chardonnay! It's rich and flavorful. This may sound bizarre but this is a champagne that's visual for me. I see/feel threads of minerals closely knit with the acid and green apples that gives it depth and a smooth texture. I love the slight salinity on the nose.

The golden apple fruit characteristics that drive this wine are so clean here! And because of that, everything else just falls into place to easily. On the nose, there’s a fun yeast quality as if you’re smelling a baguette. There’s a small but wonderful accent of almonds that follows the fruits through to the finish. This champagne also has a velvety viscosity to it, and along with that the chalky texture is presented as if on a soft cushion. Keep for the years to come, or drink it in a few months; either way, this is very enjoyable!

2008 was a great year in Champagne and this Grand Cru is a fantastic example of that statement. At 97% Chardonnay and only 3% Pinot Noir the blanc de blanc designation goes out the window but the aromas and flavors seemed to be worth it. Notes of apple blossom honey tickle the nose on a triangle of light toast, while a nice acidity mingles with unripe nectarines. This would be a great wine to pair with spicy Asian foods or great on its own as it finishes with beautiful orchard fruits.

A great vintage bottling from a phenomenal producer. On the nose there’s this wonderful delicate fruit bouquet and toasty aromas paired with bright acidity and great balance of depth and volume. All elements put together along with a great champagne vintage makes it a great value at this price!

This might be one of the oddest blends I've seen from champagne. Now I have had Syrah with just a touch of Viognier blended in to soften it up a bit, but never before have I seen a 97% Chardonnay and 3% Pinot Noir Champagne. Nevertheless the oddity of the wine makes it all the more interesting. The nose opens with Vanilla and Brown sugar, apple blossoms with a hint of cinnamon come with a bit of air. The palate is lovely and rich with a hint of graham cracker. Champagne fans really should give this bottle a try, you won't see much else like this!

This was one of the biggest highlights of my trip to Champagne this year. This spectacular offering from Le Brun De Neuville is all from Bethon, in the heart of the Sézanne. It is composed of 96% of Chardonnay and 4% Pinot Noir from some of the chalkiest soil in all of Champagne. You friends will not believe that they are drinking a Champagne that is well under $50 if you pop this tonight. Given how well the 1988 Le Brun De Neuville showed, it only can get better if you can keep your hands off of it!

Upon nosing the 2008 "Grand Vintage" Brut from Le Brun de Neuville I was immediately captivated by beguiling aromas of brioche, green apple and lemon zest. It's dry, fresh and lively on the palate with a creamy and elegant mouthfeel. This is an absolutely GORGEOUS Champagne! The price to quality ratio is simply off the charts here. This is an amazing value from a stellar vintage!

The 2008 vintage showed immense diurnal shifts in temperature, and a dry growing season. This resulted in fruit with high acidity and great complexity, which shows in the Grand Vintage brut from Le Brun De Neuville. Using only the cuveé, or the first pressing, this blend is almost entirely Chardonnay from the Bethon village in Sézanne, with four percent Pinot Noir included for structure. Aromas of underripe golden apple, subtle nutmeg, and delicate chalky mineral lead to a light bodied, bright, clean palate with hints of spiced raspberry and red currant. The finish is long with abundant, chalky minerality.

For the second time within a year, I have tasted this great little bargain of a 2008 vintage Brut. It has a bright, clean, limestone and nectarine nose due to the high percentage of chardonnay. Granny Smith apple and Anjou pear on the palate, with a very long finish that has chalk and minerals. Clean and crisp!

In what's shaping up to be a classic Champagne vintage, this wine delivers a lot for a sub $40 price point. Clean & graceful with mid palate richness and bracing acidity. Intriguing chalky mineral notes and rich brioche add depth to the lovely array of orchard fruit. This wine is a superb value and and drinks well above its price point. Ready to drink now or a wonderful Champagne to age and enjoy down the road.

The 2008 champagnes have been killing it with their pop, pizzazz and ageability. This Grand Vintage from Brun de Neuville, the first vintage we have carried from them here at k&l, encompasses the same clean, fresh acidity we love from the vintage with a pure salinity and touch of candied citrus peel. The wine is mostly Chardonnay and spent 8 years on its lees which added some nice texture and width to the focused vintage. A pinch of Pinot Noir seconds the character of lees aging and adds just a bit of fineness on the nose. This is a wine for the ages!

The 2008 vintage for champagne is tasting really amazing right now, and this 2008 Grand Vintage Brut should be on your list, if you're looking for a fantastic bottle of vintage champagne. Smooth and fresh, this champagne has an outstanding minerality that I often look for in most white wines, and I absolutely love the chalky presence on it's finish.

Of course the great '08 Vintage Champagne from anywhere is in high demand, but once a few customers get to try this beauty it should disappear quickly. The nose is incredibly intriguing leading you right into a full palate of layers of complexity. Lovely and rich with a ripe apple delicious fruit braced by an nice crisp acidity. The 8+ years on lees is nicely evident without being overwhelming

This is absolutely DELICIOUS Champagne, a stunning specimen of the 2008 vintage. It's the total package. A vibrant nose of honeyed fruit and rich brioche, backed up by more richness on the palate, with a firm mineral note ballasted by a backbone of zippy acidity all the way through. The bubbles are fine and graceful across the palate with oxidized nuttiness on the finish. This is one helluva deal. Buy it for a special occasion and wow your friends. It tastes much more expensive than it is.
