Tasting Notes

This is a charming Chardonnay from a small grower in the Mâcon. Lionel Rhedon-Marin is a recent graduate of the College of Viticulture in the nearby village of Davaye, where Guffens trained. All of their young-vine fruit is sold in bulk to one of the better negociants, who is pleased to have it, since Lionel is such a careful grower. But their old-vine fruit, all over 45 years of age, is kept for the Domaine's wine, which is tantalizing and elegant. Our staff raves include: "This Domaine has always over-delivered." And: "Every vintage the Domaine des Niales wine is one of my favorites from the Maconnais." Because of our Direct Import pricing, this is a white Burgundy-level Chardonnay that you can enjoy any night of the week.

How often do you get old vine fruit in a wine under $15? Not often enough! This is a fun, everyday drinking White Burgundy that's crisp and unoaked, perfect for fans of Chablis. Tons of mineral verve, bright green apples and white floral aromatics provide the backdrop for a well balanced palate. Great wine for the price!

The best ABC deal that is still a C in the store! This Domaine has overperformed for us for over a decade! Ripe but coolly defined yellow fruits, good aromatics and a nice hint of minerality on the finish. Good for almost all occasions.

This little wine is a top favorite of mine each year. It's one of the best values in crisp unoaked Chardonnay you'll find in the store. The 2016 vintage has a bit more verve and poise than the 2015, with crisp snap pea and tangy citrus notes. The 2015 was quite ripe with lots of tropical fruit, but the 2016 is more classic Burgundian, and drinks beautifully with seafood. Think of this as a delicious Chablis or Sancerre alternative.

The bargain White Burgundies just keep on coming! Though this Macon reflects the richness of the 2016 vintage, it still retains the bright green apple and limestone indicative of this producer. The old vine fruit also adds some golden apple/caramel richness and depth. Generous minerality on the finish keeps things bright!

This is one of 5 bargain white Burgundy favorites under $20 and do not expect it to last long in our stores. On the nose, it's very aromatic with pretty floral notes and undertones of ripe fruit. The palate brings a balanced acid and fruit finish. When I think of a nice white wine with balanced notes for warmer weather, this is the wine I would drink and share with a crowd as it would please just about any palate.

I liked these wines when I first tasted them a couple of vintages ago, but in the past two years Rhedon's Macon has absolutely astounded me. This wine is silly good for what the bottle costs. Beautiful notes of green and golden apple notes with plenty of acid and mineral drive. This showcases the beautiful richness of the 2015 vintage with fruit weight, but with such a long drive that the finish seems to go on and on. A perfect everyday Chardonnay from Burgundy.
