Tasting Notes

Walter Massa is the contadino straordinario who brought the timorasso grape back to life in the early 1980s. According to the winery's importer, he remains the leading producer and go-to grower for Timorasso. Costa del Vento is one of Massa’s three single-vineyard Timorassos. This site produces the most baroque and voluptuous wine of the three crus. In hot years it can be quite big and alcoholic; in more moderate years it walks a fine line between lushness and freshness. Winemaking notes: Native yeasts. Maceration with skins for 60 hours. Fermentation 18-22°C. Batonnage. Light filtration. Minimum six months bottle aging before release. Only 200 cases made. The westerly facing vineyard is made up of clay and calcareous soils at close to 1,000ft.

The most pristine, I've found, of Massa's ingenious wines. The Costa Del Vento shows the character of its clay soils with beautiful, soft texture. The gentle fruit rests on your palate while a bit of spice moves into a long finish.

This is the most immediate of Massa's three single vineyard Timorassos as it's rounder and creamier than its counterparts and yet it remains mouthwatering and fresh with driving acidity and earthy mineral and saline notes throughout. An impressive contrast to Premier Cru Burgundy and an outstanding pour.

If there is one white wine, in any price range, in our inventory now that takes home top honors in my book, it is this wine! Yes, I know it's not cheap by most white wine standards, and yes, the word Timorasso is somewhat reminiscent of Arrested Development's pretend psychiatric drug, Teamocil. Ironically enough Teamocil is a contraction of the Spanish words 'te amo' 'cil', which translate roughly, into "I love you easily". This wine, is so easy to love, that this translation is not lost on me. The aromatics offer a beautiful fruit, and herb tone. Almost perfumed. On the palate comes such a rich, round, textured style of white wine that it's easy to compare it to Burgundy wines twice its price. As with Walter Massa's other wines, this has beautiful minerality, as well as mouth watering acidity. This is definitely a wine to be savored, not rushed. Drinking beautifully now but I'd be seriously curious of how this will express itself in five or ten years.
