This wine exhibits a ripe, juicy core of black cherry and blackberry fruit that's supple and polished, with hints of herb, dusty berry and sage. Light cedary oak shows up on the finish, along with firm, ripe tannins. (JL)
Quite ripe and reasonably fruity for a wine of its concentration, this full-bodied effort picks up hints of herbs and cocoa with a faint suggestion of wild flowers. It is supple and a touch on the soft, fleshy side with only a moderate tannic edge for grip and structure. Enjoy it now and over the next few years with roasts and chops.
I was surprised by how well this wine turned out. Fresh notes of caramel, mocha, coffee, sweet raspberries and black cherries intermixed with a hint of chocolate jump from the glass of this aromatic, mid-weight, authoritatively flavored, fleshy, fully mature 2002. Drink it over the next 4-6 years. (RP)
Dark up front, then red-fruited in the end, this Merlot balances its thick, almost saucy texture with enough freshness to match opah chunks grilled with cherry tomatoes.
