Tasting Notes

This 100% Avize Grand Cru bottling is pure estate and all fermented in stainless steel. It comes from the "miracle" 2012 vintage, one of the smallest, most high quality crops of the decade. -Gary Westby

Franck Bonville is killer Champagne, always priced reasonably and drinks far above its price point. He's one of my go-to Champagne producers for myself, gifts for friends and recommendations for customers. The 2012 "Millesime" is made with all Grand Cru Chardonnay. This has a very mineral heavy nose with tons of chalk and crushed seashells along with white cherry, apples and pear. There is a slight weight on the palate but it's not too rich. Full of verve and freshness this is a Champagne for those who like a cleaner style.

The 2012's from Franck Bonville are simply just not to be missed! The quality is fantastic and the wines are just beautifully elegant. A nice, ripe, pear nose with just a hint of golden apples. Nicely weighty (i.e. not too heavy!) with carryover yellow fruits and the addition of granny smith apples and limestone. The finish lingers a bit with chalky acidity and then softens mightily to let you down easy with your tooth enamel intact. Just lovely and a must buy!

This 2012 vintage Champagne is an excellent value, with six years on the lees. Expansive and surprisingly weighty on the palate, this is a dry, clean Blanc de Blancs with a bit more fruit. Aromas and flavors of green and golden apple and subtle pear lead to a soft finish.

Miracle vintage! While I love all our Franck Bonville Champagnes, this 2012 release is really special. Ripe with apple and golden pear fruit, it nevertheless shows the vivid snap of acidity and chalkiness this incredible Direct Import Blanc de blancs producer is best known for. It's accessible now but bracing and structured, plus the backstory of the vintage is irresistible. A must try for fans of crisp Champagnes.

From the Grand Cru of Avize, this Champagne is one of our first from this “miracle” vintage. Much like 2000 in Bordeaux, the Champenois had many problems during the 2012 growing season. After a golden autumn, the wines turned out to be fantastic, and I have never seen so many smiling facings in the region as when I visited to taste the 2012’s as vin-clair. This is a very rich blanc de blancs, with more body and substance than even the quite broad 2006’s. That being said, it is loaded with Avize chalk, and focuses very nicely on the finish. If you like the wines, stash some for the future, I have never tasted tired Bonville, and I have tasted back to the 1959!
    Drink from 2017 to 2042
