A wine that competes with the best wines of the appellation, the 2015 Hermitage Domaine des Tourettes Blanc checks in as 100% Marsanne from two great terroirs: Bessards and Grandes Vignes. There are just over 300 cases of this elixir, which was vinified and aged all in barrel. Buttered citrus, white currants, crushed rocks and exotic flower notes all flow to a full-bodied, beautifully textured, layered, unctuous white that still glides across the palate. It’s a sensational Northern Rhône white to enjoy over the coming 2-3 decades. Winemaker Jacques Granges continues to keep this large estate up with the crème de la crème of the Northern Rhône.
Juicy, with a fun mix of green almond, creamed pear, lemon gelée, white peach and salted butter flavors that glide through. Light verbena and honeysuckle notes add lift on the finish, though this stays rich and broad overall. Drink now through 2035.
While the Les Bessards gets all the attention, the 2015 Hermitage Domaine Des Tourettes isn't far behind and is unquestionably the value play. Beef blood, cassis, blackberry liqueur and loads of crushed rock nuances all emerge from this ripe, concentrated, full-bodied Hermitage that has a classic, structured profile. It's well worth a case purchase and will keep for two to three decades. As always, this cuvée comes from two parcels, the lower part of the Bessards lieu-dit and the Les Grandes Vignes located at the highest point on Hermitage Hill. It’s completely destemmed and sees 16 months in 30% new French oak.
Bright yellow. Vibrant, mineral-accented orchard and pit fruits on the perfumed nose, accompanied by a suave floral nuance that builds in the glass. Shows impressive depth as well as vivacity and lift to the fresh, densely packed orange, pear and nectarine flavors, which are supported by a spine of zesty minerality. The floral element comes back strong on the bright, sharply focused, impressively long finish, which leaves a chalky mineral note behind. (JR)
