K&L Notes

Great $20 to $30 Pinot Noirs are rare these days with the grapes themselves, and the materials to make them the right way, costing too much to keep it in that range over time. Sure, Pinot at that price is everywhere but most are mass produced and don't much like the varietal on the label. We are always apprehensive about the quality before we taste them and most fulfill these expectations. So on the rare occasion that we find one that is not only affordable but also varietally and regionally correct and critically acclaimed the only thing we can do is back up the trucks and shout from the heavens (or at least our e-mail platform) "BUY THIS, BUY THIS NOW!" Hahn's SLH Pinot from 2014 was a huge hit and the 2015 has finally arrived! Red currant, black cherry, toasted oak and spice come together in this lush, fresh, crowd-pleasing Pinot. At our price, this easygoing Pinot is a great value!

I have never stocked a single wine more than the 2014 Hahn Pinot Noir during the Oct-Dec months last year. It was a huge customer favorite that we could not get enough of! The scores are in again for this fantastic 2015 vintage and the wine is sure to be another hit. Ripe raspberry and cherry fruits with a hit of baking spice and oak on the finish that will once again fill the $20 to $30, crowd-pleasing Pinot Noir space that is getting harder to find each year.
    Top Value!

The 2015 Pinot Noirs from our best coastal growing areas continue to astound me with their exceptional richness and presentation, and the 2015 Hahn SLH is a great example of the super high quality of this vintage. Rich in appearance, the color is deep ruby with lovely reddish hue, while in its opulent bouquet you will be treated to a Pinot of lush, ripe smells of blueberry, strawberry, and violets, with hints a creamy, wet river stone, mild toasty characteristics. All of this carries over nicely to a broad, viscous, elegant mouthfeel that leads to a long silky finish. We need cases of this Gem, according Rusty, to which I totally agreed… so be it! A WONDERFUL VALUE!!! ***** 14.5% ABV *****

The Hahn label is not unfamiliar to K&L; the 2012 vintage did extremely well in our wine club and had people coming back for more. The 2013 was one of the top selling Pinot Noirs of 2015 and a wild customer favorite. The 2014 went from one of the top Pinots of the year to flat out one of the top wines of the year, period! So we were chomping at the bit to get to the very quantity short, but equally great 2015 vintage. The 2015 bottling shows the same great interplay between Santa Lucia Highlands power and density and the pure Pinot Noir driven fruit and spices. Full of spiced plum, licorice, boysenberry and cherry cola this wine is packed with complexity and flavor for its respective price point. With surprising delicacy and length on the palate this charms not only with the restrain it shows but also with its overall feel, one of a slightly coating richness but still with enough vigor to pair with any multitude of foods or just be your go to after work cocktail red.

Nice, full bodied, juicy Pinot to tear through the craving. Complemented by some oak-derived flavors, this multi-dimensional bottle can follow you through all of your evening stages, from cooking, to eating, to relaxing on the couch.

For those who have been coming in and asking, the wait is over: the new vintage of Hahn SLH Pinot is in stock! This wine has flown out the door in the past two vintages for good reason: it is incredibly balanced for the price being asked. Sweet red berry with notes of baking spice are all blended upon a layer of acid that keeps the wine fresh and focused. A true crowd-pleaser in that it is both immediately approachable, and has layers of complexity to hold your attention.

When I first tasted the Hahn Pinot Noir, I liked it but something wasn't quite right. It had a lush, medium body mid-palate with soft, sweet raspberries and sun-ripened strawberries, but it was missing the focus and purity that I was used to from the last vintage of the SLH. So I stuck it in the freezer for a few minutes and it was a complete game changer! It went from being a friendly, approachable, rich crowd-pleaser, to a Pinot Noir with refinement and balance. So regardless of whether you want to put a slight chill on it or serve it straight away, this Pinot Noir severely over delivers on all notes!
