K&L Notes

One of the truly great Syrahs of the world. I would happily run this up against the very best of the Northern Rhone, or anywhere else on the planet, come to think of it. After the massive success of the 2013 release of Homage the 2014 seems to have raised the bar yet again! Quite spectacularly it has even better scores than its predecessor; a perfect 100 point score from one of NZ's top critics, two 99 point scores and a giant 98 point score from JamesSuckling.com! 2014 was another picture perfect vintage in New Zealand; warm conditions produced powerful wines with a fantastic combination of fruit and structure. The 2014 Homage Syrah is built to last but also very gratifying even as a young wine; this can be drunk anytime over the next 20+ years. A true collectable worthy of a place in anyone's cellar. The Trinity Hill "Homage" is named in honor of the late Gerard Jaboulet of L'Tain Hermitage. In 1996 Gerard took Trinity Hill winemaker John Hancock "under his wing" and later comment that John was the most committed winemaker he had ever worked with. As a measure of gratitude Gerard gave John Syrah cuttings from his famed La Chappelle vineyard in Hermitage! And so the Homage was born from this very cuttings and is produced only in years of exceptional quality. (Ryan Woodhouse, K&L NZ wine buyer)

This particular release from Trinity Hill is a bit tricky. It smells quite ripe, with deep boysenberry and blackberry on the nose but, in sneaks some minerals, clove and white pepper. Very, very lively on the palate, with tart blackberry, licorice and more white pepper. Some chalkiness on the lingering finish seems to indicate that this one will be a great cellar addition.

I am not normally drawn to Australian Syrah and I too often seem to confuse the weighty, unctuous versions of Australia past with New Zealand, having majored in Geography I am even more embarrassed. Yet the Syrah that comes out of New Zealand’s Hawke’s Bay is a wine of a different ilk. The nose is restrained, showing cooler climate fruit character, some black pepper and bits of earth while on the palate the wine shows more elegance, snap, it has none of the brooding, heaviness I don’t like in Syrah it’s remarkably agile. The body is deceiving while it is quite rich it doesn’t show it at all, good acidity and mineral grit seem to elevate this wine on your palate and lift the finish. Excellent breeding, focus and flavors, really solid wine.
    Drink from 2017 to 2029

This is an incredibly serious Syrah from one of the most exciting sites in New Zealand. Hawke's Bay delivers Syrah of exceptional quality with the near perfect weather and farming conditions of 2014. This is a producer I turn to time and time again for wines that are complex and intricate, yet crowd-pleasing, often a hard combination to encounter with a younger wine at this price. This seriously rivals any top-notch Syrah from around the world and should be lauded as one of the best wines of the region right now.
