The 2016 Petit Gravet Ainé is a total turn-on. Deep, powerful and voluptuous, the 2016 brings together the aromatic expressiveness of Cabernet Franc with the plush fruit of Merlot. Espresso, raspberry jam, mint, rose petal and blood orange are some of the signatures. Exotic, alluring and stunningly beautiful, the 2016 simply has it all. What a gorgeous wine this is! At times, Petit Gravet Ainé can be dominated by the Cabernet Franc, but that is not the case with the 2016 (at least not today), as the sheer density of the fruit is incredibly prominent. The 2016 Petit-Gravet-Aine is a blend of 80% Cabernet Franc and 20% Merlot cropped at 35 hectoliters per hectare and matured in 100% new French oak. The new oak here is neatly integrated into the abundant black fruit with red cherries and a touch of orange rind. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, a pleasant savory and bell pepper note from the Cabernet Franc, spicy with fine structure and a persistent finish. Plenty of personality here; this is an excellent Saint Emilion to follow up the impressive 2015. (NM)
