Tasting Notes

Château de la Charrière is one of our most popular direct import producers and a label that easily represents the best bang for your buck we carry in Burgundy. Formerly run by Yves Girardin, the business is now run by his young son Benoit, who definitely has modernized the winemaking a bit since his first vintage in 2011. Whereas the wines were a bit funky and rustic previously, the past few vintages are much cleaner; showcasing the pureness of the pinot noir by de-stemming completely so as to remove tannic structure. The 2015 vintage represents their best wines to date, in our opinion.

The brooding, earthy and dark-fruited 2015 Clos des Vignes Franches, with notes of black cherry and warm baking spices, is a well-built, rich and concentrated wine. Demonstrating plenty of dark, ripe, flavor-intense fruit on the mid-palate with super clean style, this is a great example of the vintage. While completely delicious now, this wine has supreme potential in the medium term, making it a rewarding pick-up for this autumn and even the next.

When we visited Chateau de la Charriere this past Spring to taste the 2015 vintage, we said to ourselves: "This could be the most exciting tasting of the trip." We thought that because the Charriere wines have always been well-made, but old school in style. We hoped the extra ripeness from the warmer harvest might do wonders for these bargain bottles and to our immense happiness, it did! The 2015 1er cru "Clos des Vignes Franches" is the best wine I've ever tasted from the property and now that they're destemming entirely, the fruit shines well beyond the structure. This is a dark, unctuous, and robust with gobs of blackberry and black cherry flushing out the palate. The tannins and acidity still provide a foundation, but whereas former vintages were a bit tough up front, this one is incredibly inviting. Make no mistake: the Charriere wines are the biggest Burgundy secrets in the store right now. The 2015 editions are tremendous values, offering old school rusticity with modern ripeness. Bravo!

Benoit Giradin’s Beaune “Clos des Vignes Franches” is the darkest, deepest of the bunch. It is round, rich and velvety in the mouth with hints of cherry cola and blackberries. This wine has a nice tannic backbone and should age quite nicely.
