Founded in 1920 by the Denis grandfather with 5 hectares, the property was taken on by his son in 1946, expanding the vineyard to 23 hectares. Maurice Denis undertook the modernisation in the 1950’s, constructing a modern wine cellar, the purchasing the first tractor in 1959…. It was in 1975 that Antoine and Jean-Noel decided to follow in the family tradition and created Domaine du Petit Clocher with their father. They understood very quickly that success comes by developing quality wines, closely monitored from vineyard to bottle. Since 2000, a fourth generation of winemakers has arrived at the company. Stephane, Julien and Vincent follow the family passion and are opening up new markets. Today the domaine cultivates 80 hectares of vines.
There are 80 hectares of vines are spread amongst 3 communes within a 6 kilometre radius of the domaine. The vineyard has an average age of 30 years. Has been long maintained by the family. More than half the area is made up of red varieties, (Cabernet Franc 30%, Cabernet Sauvignon 15%, Grolleau Noir 5% and Gamay 2%) and the rest are predominantly white varieties (Chardonnay 25%, Chenin 18%, Grolleau Gris 12%, Sauvignon Blanc 5%).

This has intriguing musky aromas of dried apricots and ripe stone fruits along with hints of fresh white peach. The round rich middle leaves a full palate impression and the just off-dry finish is super food friendly.

Possibly my favorite new under $20 white from anywhere! This wine is light and clean, without any of the funk that can sometimes crop up in Chenin Blanc. It starts with a lovely honeysuckle and apricot nose, and then expounds on the theme with peach blossom and nectarine on the palate. Though well balanced with a fresh cut of acidity, the wine still has some of the weight and texture commonly seen in wines from the area. This is thoroughly delightful on its own, but will absolutely be food friendly as well.

This is a well balanced, aromatic and complex wine for under $15. What more could you ask for!? It's round and full but carries a bracing acidity to keep things lifted. It's got a great, driving minerality surrounded by notes of delicious dried apples and apricots. There's also something that reminds me of having steeped black tea alongside a pear upside down cake that I find especially appealing. The 2016 vintage in Loire is regarded as high quality. Throw an Indian summer into the mix which helped the parcels of Chenin Blanc ripen to their full potential, and you've got a particularly noteworthy Loire wine to grab. This would be great with a savory tart or a ham, cheese and asparagus quiche.
