Tasting this against our other Von Hovel Kabinett from 2015 was a great way to compare and contrast the two side by side. This is fermented in neutral cask versus stainless steel and carries almost twice the residual sugar per liter. While both have a nice, low ABV (8%), the 35 grams of residual sugar tempers the acidity. While it's not searing, it's still present and gives this wine a racy freshness. There's more fruit up front, orange blossoms, stony minerality and flint. The longer hang time for the grapes benefits the wine as the Saar is the coolest and most windy of the German wine regions. This is another fantastic Riesling to add to my repertoire.

Showing a classic Mosel nose - petrol-tinged layered with Meyer lemon notes, the structure creates an intriguing balance of crisp acidity vs. sweetness while the layers of fruit and minerality shine distinctively through. This a delicious and thoughtful wine from a an awesome vintage at a great price! Super Recommended!

A single vineyard offering from Von Hovel, this is a very different example than their Kabinett Saar Riesling, which is shocking given it's the same producer and region. This bottling showcases fascinating minerality and drive, but is beautifully balanced by the sweetness of fruit. If you were looking for a fruity, simple Riesling, this is not the bottle for you. This has great backbone and complex, lasting flavors. A very cool find and something I would be happy to share with anyone curious to branch out in Riesling.

In a ripe vintage like 2015, I was expecting this Von Hovel bottling to be a forward and fruity rendition of Scharzhofberg and probably a declassified Spatlese. Turns out, I was wrong. Much of the youthful lushness and fruit has coiled under the piercing and serious Saar acidity to realize a mineral-driven, elegant, and classically crunchy Kabinett that at the moment drinks as dry as many trockens despite its statistics. This Riesling could use about 3-4 years in bottle to unfurl and it will continue to develop for more than a decade. Short-to-medium term cellaring often isn't long enough with fine German wines, but in this case it will pay off with a serious expression of one of the most important terroirs in Germany. A fine lesson in purity and focus at about 1/4 the price of an Egon Muller Scharzhofberger Kabinett.
