K&L Notes

Château d’Hanteillan trace its history to the 12th century, when Pope Alexander III mentioned it as belonging to the Abbey of Vertheuil. The estate has traded hands numerous times over the years. Since 1972 it has been in the hands of the Mathieu-Blasco family. Like many estates in the Haut-Médoc, Château d’Hanteillan produces wines of a quality that far outshines the price. In either a good or great vintage, you often are looking at a spectacular buy—as with this 2014.

This starts out with earthy scents of blackberry and raspberry. The middle is supple and smooth with smoky cherry fruit, some spice and a touch of herb. The finish is crisp and polished showing ripe tannin and plenty of length. This is a great value.

A vintage that was undoubtedly overshadowed by the massive successes of 2015 and 2016, look to 2014 as bargain central. Notes of dense red and blue berries, burnt cedar, baking spices and a touch of vanilla, this mid-weight red is an absolute star for less than fifteen bucks. We always seem to find value driven Bordeaux that drastically over-performs for the money and this is a prime example of such. Pull the cork an hour before service or put it down for a couple years to settle down. Great wine either way!

A superb value 2014 Bordeaux. Tons of red rose and red currant aromas and flavors. The Cabernet shines brightly here. Perfect for your Friday night Claret with a rack of lamb or even better prime ribs of beef. make sure to decant an hour or so. Finely structured and great to cellar a few years.

First off: you've gotta give this wine an hour in the decanter. The difference is night and day, even though we're talking about a bargain-priced Haut Medoc and not a heralded classified growth. Secondly, have this with a burger, or a steak, or something substantial. You do those two things and you're going to feel like you scored a heckuva deal with this 2014 Hanteillan, a sub-$15 score from a completely underrated vintage that continues to turn up deal, after deal, after deal. The shocking thing about the wine it's about 60% cabernet from prime property near St. Estephe. Most of the time you get merlot in the bargain priced Bordeaux realm, but in this case you're getting the big boy fruit. When's the last time you found a highly-scored $13.99 cabernet from Bordeaux?

The 2014 Chateau D'Hanteillan Haut Medoc is another fantastic value from the 2014 Bordeaux vintage. This is a stunning wine for a mere $13.99 a bottle. Beautiful aromas of black figs, licorice, menthol and notes of baker's chocolate rise from the glass while the palate is a lively blend of red fruits, spice and bitter chocolate. The tannins are firm and the racy acidity gives this wine excellent body and lift. The perfect everyday red Bordeaux that won't kill your pocketbook.
Top Value! Drink from 2017 to 2022
