K&L Notes

From the importer: "A certified organically farmed vineyard on the island of Santorini, Sigalas is producing some of the most sought after white wines in Greece. These intensely aromatic whites, based on the indigenous Asirtiko grape, are grown in the volcanic soils of Santorini, consisting of cinders, rust, lava and pumice stone. These wines have excellent structure, good acidity and a long, full flavored finish. With a unique growing method, whereby the vines are trained into a cylindrical shape, the fruit ripens gently within the basket to protect it from the strong ocean winds. High humidity at night allows for just enough moisture intake for the grapes to develop and the soil structure and lack of nutrients ensure distinct minerality in the wines."

This is like a vacation in a bottle! Super fresh, and delicious from start to finish. The entry is clean with notes of salty crystalline acidity showing layers of citrus and minerality. Super elegant and complex, I can't wait to get this home and share with friends over a lemon-garlic shrimp.dinner. Super Recommended!

Tasting this phenomenal Santorini white recently, I have decided it is not merely my favorite Greek white, but one of my absolute favorite whites from anywhere currently in stock. Mineral, salty and lively, the wine's 6 months of lees ageing (with battonage) does not take away from the spritely, linear, focused quality of the wine. The wine's length, and it's phenolic, subtly bitter snap towards the finish, makes you want to drink it, particularly with a spread of simply prepared grilled seafood on the table! Great wine.

This wine, made on the windy island of Santorini in the Mediterranean, is both powerful and nuanced, with a beautiful style unique to the region. It is intensely aromatic, with flavors of stone-fruit and melon, lemon citrus and white florals. On the palate it has medium weight, with high acidity and vibrant minerals that highlight the powerful fruit. The acid-driven finish goes on and on. If you’re having white fish for dinner, it would be a mistake not to pair it with this.

Sigalas is Santorini's benchmark producer. Paras Sigalas has created one of the island's most frequented wineries and its most sought after wine. Every year we have had tremendous success with his wines and 2016 is no different. The oily texture of Assyrtiko is striking when you first try it. Surrounded by notes of white flowers, roasted pears and dried lemon peel it is a long and inviting wine. There is no surprise that this has the structure to age. I visited Sigalas a few years ago where our group experienced a mini-vertical. Paras kept pulling out older bottles until we went back almost ten years. The sweet spot for me was about the three to five year range. The wines opened with creamier but very integrated palates and more pronounced fruit and smoky mineral notes. It was if the wines picked up more fruit along the way. Not saying that you should, but if you did age a few bottles, you would be in for a real treat. The Sigalas is one of the Mediterranean's most elite and interesting whites that needs to be experienced.

This is another stunner from Greece! Domaine Sigalas focuses on native grape varieties and has been a pioneer of organic viticulture, participating in a government organic farming methods program since the early 1990's. He works most closely with Assyrtiko, the varietal this wine is made of. It's incredibly refreshing and smells like saline sea breezes and fresh lemons, exactly how I imagine the island of Santorini smells. It's refreshing, zippy and full of life. A must try for those who love mouth watering white wines!

I always snatch up a few bottles of this wine when it arrives to the store. While I would not call this a delicate white wine it definitely has some attractive subtleties. It is refreshing and abundantly flavorful with bright lemon and stone fruit flavors and aromas, and texture that is expectedly luscious. Dynamic acidity and a mineral finish that has a hint of smoke brings everything together. This is one fantastic white wine. Drink one today and lay one down – there’s plenty to enjoy from this bottle for years to come.
