K&L Notes

More notes and praise from Robert Parker: "Founded in 1958, this has been one of Jorge Ordoñez' most consistently reliable producers of absolutely astonishing values from the province of Zaragoza. The appellation is Campo de Borja and this winery owns a whopping 3,706 acres of vineyards, of which 3,125 are planted to Grenache! The poor soils are dominated by the chalkiness, as this is close to the Moncayo mountain range that is nearly pure chalk. It is a continental climate and the vines are relatively young, having been planted 1981-1986. The winemaking is impressive and the values that emerge from here are mind-boggling." (11/2015)

An astounding value from an underappreciated region outside Zaragoza, the Tres Picos gives Rhone grenache a run for its money. The concentration in this wine is superb, especially considering its price point. Dried flowers and dark berries waft from the inky nectar revealing only a hint of oak spice. Brambly blueberries and blackberries swirl on the palate, almost adhering thanks to slightly sticky tannins, and leave behind traces of warm baking spice. It finishes with a touch of savory smoke - a nod to its time in the barrel - that rounds out the package nicely and keeps things interesting. This wine makes a perfect partner for smoked meat or a just cozy night in front of the TV.

Perhaps more than any other wine in the section, Borsao has introduced so many drinkers to great value red wine, Spanish style. Translation: this wine has loads of ripe, mixed berry fruits, an underlying earthy/smoky savory quality, and an attractive veneer of spice and toast due to a short time spent in oak. As always, there is a lot to like, particularly for fans of richly fruited wines and/or those who are just starting to explore the diversity and value of Spain's wines. One of our most popular Grenache (Garnacha) based wines.
