Tasting Notes

Castillo de Viñas is a label put together by our good friend María Alvarez for her Spanish Wine Exclusives portfolio of wines (many of which we direct import ourselves). The Castillo de Viñas white and rosé both come from a true maestro in the village of Codorvín, Honorio Rubio. Having quickly earned a reputation amongst staff and our more savvy customers for producing whites which recall the great whites of Lopez de Heredia, this rosé bottling is produced from about 60% Garnacha and 40% Viura, the classic blend for "clarete" style rosé in this famous area of Rioja which pioneered the style. For fans of Muga's rosé, we would enthusiastically suggest this wine.

Recently had the pleasure of trying this wine. Easily one of our best rosé offerings in Spain, if not in the entire store. This clarete style of rosado has aromas of fresh red berries, blood orange, and melon. There is a saline and slightly toasty quality to the wine as well. Overall, quite clean and pretty on the nose. The palate is fresh, and juicy, with flavors of peaches and strawberries giving way to crisp, mineral flavors on the finish. While possessing more weight than some typical rosé wines, this rosado is both lively on the palate and quite refreshing. It can be enjoyed on its own or accompanied by a wide variety of food options. A truly versatile food wine with various Mediterranean cuisines, ranging from Spanish to Italian, French, or even Levantine. A fantastic rosado made in the classic Rioja style; two thumbs up!
    Top Value!

This pale rosé impressed me with its cool strawberry aromas, its great balance of clean, dry drive and generous fruit flavors, but most of all with its length. This is a long finishing, classy rosé from Spain that will easily compete with wines costing $10 more from provence.

My new favorite rosé has arrived, just in time for the tail end of the season! This is the classic style of Rioja "clarete," which is to say a delicious blend of Garnacha and Viura, macerated together briefly and fermented dry, dry, dry. Flavors of tangy red berries, ripe citrus and peach skins carry an electric acidity, though texturally speaking this wine has plenty of weight to allow for a wide variety of food pairings. From Ossau-Iraty cheese to grilled salmon, or oven roasted chicken thighs with preserved lemons, tomatoes and olives, this wine is ready for whatever you throw its way. A wonderful old school expression of Riojano rosé, produced by one of the region's leading talents in Honorio Rubio.
