A whiff of reduction isn't sufficient to mask the pretty essence of pear and apple aromas that enjoy floral and citrus top notes. The beautifully textured, concentrated and sappy medium weight plus flavors are both sleek and delineated, all wrapped in a classy and impeccably well-balanced finish that flashes more minerality than is usual for Combettes.
The 2015 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Combettes has a strict and linear bouquet, earthier than the Puligny Folatières, broody at first but gradually opening in the glass. The palate is well balanced, vibrant and crisp with impressive tension. This builds with much more gusto in the mouth than the nose, fanning out with a touch of lemongrass towards the finish and very impressive persistence. This is one of the best from Domaine Leflaive this year in terms of transcending expectations. (NM)
The 2015 Combettes was really showing beautifully at the time of my visit to Domaine Leflaive. The bouquet is pure, complex and vibrant, wafting from the glass in a lovely blend of lemon, pear, tangerine, chalky minerality, beeswax, spring flowers and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and quite nicely defined by its underlying minerality. The core is plush, the acids are zesty and the finish is very long, focused and complex. A fine, fine example that will want at least a couple of years in the cellar to fully blossom, but will drink well from a fairly early age. 2018-2035+.
Bright, light yellow. Less fruit-forward on the nose than the preceding samples, offering scents of subtle saline minerality, menthol and almond paste. Fat, rich and fine-grained on the palate, with ripe peach and pineapple fruit flavors conveying an excellent balance of sweetness and acidity. The firm, rising finish shows terrific pineappley cut and a tannic touch. (ST)
