Proprietors Gilles and Thierry Faraval turned in an impressive performance with their 2003 Vacqueyras La Ponche. A blend of 70% Grenache (from 50-year old vines) and 30% Mourvedre (from 10-year old vines), it is a jammy, heady effort with loads of alcohol and fruit, medium to full body, and an exotic, ripe style boasting layers of fruit as well as glycerin. Dark red. Assertive nose offers peppery bitter cherry, violet, magnolia and garrigue scents. Sweet and lush on the palate, with a dense, chewy texture and bright flavors of kirsch, licorice and espresso. Extremely rich and concentrated on the building, expanding finish. Made mostly from old grenache vines, this easily carries its 15.8% alcohol. (JR)
