Aromas of cassis bush and wet earth with oyster shell. Medium to full body, firm and juicy tannins and a delicious finish. A well-rounded wine. Fantastic depth. From biodynamically grown grapes. Try drinking in 2020.
The estate, under the direction of Claire Lurton, continues its slow regular progress. In this vintage, the emphasis is on the fruit, which is forward and full of black-currant flavors. There is a good medium-term potential to this ripely attractive wine. Drink starting from 2022. (RV)
The 2014 Haut-Bages Libéral is vibrant and also quite closed in on itself, which is probably a good thing for the medium term. Smoke, gravel, smoke, anise, tobacco and intense red-fruit notes are front and center. I would give the 2014 a few years in bottle to shed some tannins, but I imagine the wine will always be a bit wild. (AG)
A hint of bay streaks through quickly before the core of red and black currant preserves takes over. Hefty in feel, with extra anise, spice, pepper and singed apple wood notes filling in on the finish. Best from 2019 through 2028. (JM)
