With an underlying richness, this medium-bodied white never forgets about its throughput of acidity, allowing for an undeniable crispness on the palate. Floral on the nose in apple and orange blossom, it shows a stony character that speaks to mineral components like oystershell and rock. (VB)
The 2015 Chardonnay McCrea Vineyard features enticing notes of ripe grapefruit, white peaches and lime leaves with nuances of baking bread, fresh ginger and coriander seed. Medium to full-bodied, richly fruited and delivering a decadent oiliness to the texture, it fills the palate with citrus and stone fruit layers, finishing long and spicy. (LPB)
Kistler's 2015 Chardonnay McCrea Vineyard is soft, open-knit and gracious, all of which will make it easy to drink and appreciate upon release. Orchard fruit, dried flowers, chamomile and almond notes grace a subtle, understated Chardonnay that speaks in hushed tones. Today, the McCrea is a bit subdued relative to how it showed from tank. We have found that Chardonnays hailing from the Sonoma Mountain AVA are often firmer and more structured than their valley-floor cousins, and, while this weighty example fits the bill and is built along slightly tighter lines, it is also remarkably deep in well-defined fruit and long on layered richness. It suggests crisp apples at one moment and fresh limes the next with fine oak in support and persistent accents of lees that make for a patently complex wine, and, however involving it may be at the moment, it is sure to age beautifully and very convincingly makes the case that serious Chardonnay should not be gulped down too soon.
Exhibits a lively core of citrus-shaded fruit that's tight, intense and lively. Pure and persistent. Drink now through 2022. (JL)
