K&L Notes

Winery Notes: "Auntsfield continues the proud heritage of Marlborough’s first vineyard and winery established in 1873. Our Single Vineyard wines are made from grapes grown at Auntsfield Estate. Each wine shows the distinctive characteristics of ripeness, texture and minerality qualities unique to the ancient Greywacke rock and Loess clay soils of the vineyard. Auntsfield Estate aims to produce a distinctive style of Sauvignon Blanc. The style is aimed towards texture, complexity and length, balancing the typical Marlborough fruit spectrum and aromatics with richness and mouth feel. The 2016 Sauv Blanc displays lifted and pure aromas of fresh passionfruit, ripe citrus and lime. Notes of dried herbs, lemongrassand blackcurrant add pungency and intensity to the aromatics. On the palate it is powerful, tight and elegant. This wine displays intense ripe fruit flavours of passionfruit juice and white peach, with citrus notes of lime and mandarin pith. The palate has intense concentration and generous weight, balanced by an underlying minerality and tight structure to shape a wine with lively tension and textural balance."

What's really unique about this Savvy is it comes from the Southern Valleys in Marlborough. This area is unique in that it is predominately clay, which holds more heat than gravel soils. This brings more richness, texture, and energetic fruit quality to the wine. Juicy, fresh, and lively, this Sauvignon Blanc is the perfect antidote to the late Summer heat. This is an easy sipper that also happens to have multiple layers of flavor from the soils and neutral oak aging, which makes it all the more fun to drink. This is one white I'll be drinking running into the Fall.

Just when I think our buyer Ryan Woodhouse can't outdo himself, he raises the bar yet again for value in the New Zealand category. This is stunning Sauvignon Blanc with huge press and huge flavor for a ridiculous price thanks to our direct purchasing. Cutting out the middleman here has resulted in sub-$20 juice that is surprisingly unctuous and round for what I was expecting. This is not your grapefruit-laden, super herbaceous NZ Sauv Blanc. This is on another level in terms of nuance and complexity with layer upon layer of stonefruit, minerality, and tropicality. Again, the price of admission is crazy.

This phenomenal vineyard is immaculately tended by the Cowley family. The wine has all you’d expect in juicy citrus fruit, white peach, passion fruit and currant leaf. There is also lovely texture from the low yields, clay-rich soils and small portion of fruit that is fermented in neutral French oak. Auntsfield have been on my radar for years so I was delighted to see Decanter Magazine rated their 2016 Sauv Blanc as highest scoring premium NZ Sauvignon Blanc with a whopping 98 points issued by the multi Master of Wine / Master Sommelier panel of reviewers! Our importer direct relationship means we can bring you this benchmark example of Marlborough SB at the shockingly reasonable price of $15.99!!!
    Top Value!
