This is a serious Napa Valley Cabernet at an unbelievable price point. Due to the high percentage of Petit Verdot in the blend (11 percent) there is a dark, gamey quality to this wine, and I recommend decanting it for an hour or so before enjoying. Although tannins are fairly supple and soft, flavors and aromatics are intensely powerful. Dried herbs and spices like oregano, sage and cinnamon waft above the sanguine undertone, and the palate is loaded with condensed dried blueberry, cranberry and strawberry. This is a wine that will continue to age nicely, but is basically at It's peak.

As California Cabernets go they have been on a hot streak when it comes to vintages. Unfortunately 2012 has been pushed aside by 2013 and 2014, whereas I find the 12 to be very balanced from beginning to end. The Altvs is no exception. Out of the glass, you will find fully ripe blackberry, cassis, plum aromas and flavors; a second round captivates with violet, tobacco and new leather. The first sip is loaded with intense candied fruit composed of sweet plums and ripe red berries, yet it is the integrated fruit, acidity and tannins that keep me coming back to the glass again and again. Full-bodied with soft tannins, a velvety mouthfeel and a long, lingering finish. I think in end 2012 vintage will be up there right along side with the 13 and 14 vintage.

I can still remember the first time I tasted Merus. It was over 12 years ago but the flavor profile and texture were so unique and distinguished that I can still easily recall it to this day. In fact it was the rich, unctuous, full-bodied texture that distinctly stuck out in my mind. And when I tasted the second label of Merus, Altvs, I was immediately taken aback at how they were able to achieve the same dense, plush, over-the-top silky texture that you get in Merus, at a quarter of the cost! The Altvs Napa Valley Cab is indulgent, decadent and incredibly hedonistic. The great thing about this wine is that you can revel in feeling obscenely over-self-indulgent without feeling it in the pocketbook!

Plush and lush! Better hold on to your seat when taking a sip of this powerhouse. The color is deep and attractive with legs for days. Heavy elements cassis, plums, oak, and rough tannins make an extensive wine worthy of the heftiest meal.

Fans of big, sturdy Cabs will love this wine! Altvs is a wine made by Merus Winery in Napa. The majority of the grapes are sourced from Coombsville, which is known for its cooler climate, and are blended with grapes from as far up the valley as St Helena. This is full bodied, dense and darkly colored wine. It shows lots of minerals, lead pencil, black cherry and cassis flavors. I do recommend a good amount of air or throw it in a decanter and enjoy!
