A total stunner, with a long, pure beam of raspberry and red currant coulis streaming through, flanked by light violet, iron and incense notes before picking up lilting rooibos tea and rose petal accents on the finish. The fruit never fades, and there’s perfectly embedded acidity weaving everything together. A dreamy wine. (JM)
Leading off the top two special cuvées, huge notes of kirsch and framboise define the 2015 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Quartz and it has smoking good nuances of spring flowers, orange blossom and spice coming through with time in the glass. Full-bodied, seamless and silky, with present tannin and a great finish, it shines for its sheer elegance and purity. As always, this cuvée is 85% Grenache and 15% Syrah brought up all in demi-muids. Very attractive dark plum and blackberry fruit on the nose. Old vine grenache is working powerful and commanding style into this wine. The palate has sweeping tannins that carve deep channels of red fruit flavor. Warm finish.
In 2015, the Grenache and Syrah were vinified together for the 2015 Châteauneuf du Pape Les Quartz cuvée, and that goes a long way towards showing how even and consistent the ripening was in the vintage. This ruby/purple-tinged beauty offers classic notes of blackcurrants, black raspberries and strawberries intermixed with lots of spice, flowers and incense. Medium to full-bodied, elegant and fresh, it has solid concentration and will be a beautiful wine. (JD)
Deep ruby. Smoke- and spice-accented aromas of raspberry, boysenberry and cherry pit, backed by a suave floral nuance. Juicy and precise on the palate, offering sharply focused, densely packed red and blue fruit and cola flavors and a hint of succulent herbs. A minerally nuance adds lift and focus to the youthfully tannic, focused finish, which clings with superb intensity. (JR)
