K&L Notes

The story of this remarkable estate is personified in the "La Reserve" bottling. In the mid-1930s, a team of surveyors traveled all throughout the appellations of France determining the boundaries for each wine region. Chateauneuf du Pape was one of the first to be demarcated by this team. If you look at a map of the region though, there is a sliver missing from the whole of the pie. The story goes a little like this - when the original surveyors for the appellation system knocked on the door of Clos du Caillou, instead of a welcome, they were greeted by a shotgun. Scaring away these officials essentially left this part of the property out of the appellation as an almost punishment for this transgression. This mythologized the estate and we as consumers benefit by getting a wine of top tier Chateauneuf quality for pretty much a Cotes-du-Rhone price. The La Reserve is about 70% Grenache with 30% Mourvedre planted on sandy soils from the original "clos" or walled vineyard of the estate. The "clos" is situated next to their vines that go into their Chateauneuf Reserve which is usually around 3 times the price. All grapes are farmed organically, hand harvested, fermented in concrete tanks with indigenous yeasts and aged in demi-muid (600L casks) for 12 to 14 months.

From the old vine Clos that serves as the walled reminder of their past transgressions. This goes well beyond Chateauneuf look-a-like. The wine comes from sandy soils like Rayas. It is rich and dense with an explosive bouquet of gorgeous red and black fruit. A panoply of flavors unfolds on the palate with a long, long finish. Hard to believe its not Chateauneuf, and not one that would be $100.
