Tasting Notes

We were first introduced to the wines of Eric Cottat a few years back. He was brought to our attention by one of our long-time friends and winemakers in Sancerre and we brought in a small amount as that was all we were allowed to take at the time. Eric is a one-man show and only produces a small amount of wines each vintage for family, friends, and close customers, and then sells the rest of his fruit off to other eager producers in the region. Last year I had the opportunity to pay Mr. Cottat a visit and quickly became enamored by how he goes about doing things. The Sancerre rouge is Pinot Noir. Typically, it's a super fresh style with lots of red spice and textural mineral. Lighter in color and body but with really nice focus and drive. Open this and decant for about an hour so the purity of fruit can open up and really shine.

    Eric Cottat is one of our perennial favorites for Sancerre, and his approach to Pinot Noir is so fun and fresh. Pressed from Loire Valley fruit, the palate is very light and dry, with aromas and flavors of juicy red apple, tangerine pith, anisette and carnation. There is a delightful energy and lift to this Pinot... Throw on a slight chill and It's a great Summer evening apéritif!

    Here's a Pinot that regardless of where it is from, it is delicious - I mean, it will please all lovers of good Pinot Noir. It happens to be from France, from the beautiful Loire Valley to be more exact, and it is a classic! Gorgeous aromatics of fresh cherries, violets, cola and even a touch of vanilla. On the very soft palate, all of the above is framed by the juicy acidity and medium tannins. This wine would be absolutely perfect with vegetarian dishes, Indian cuisine, Mexican, Pizza, Peking duck, and I could go on. Very versatile. Bravo Eric Cottat!

    I love Pinot Noir in general and I have especially come to love the PN coming from the Loir valley. The high acid and strong minerality of Sancerre lends itself to beautiful clean and elegant red wines for those, like myself, who love the leaner style. Eric Cottat has long been my favorite white Sancerre and I believe that his red may now be my favorite PN from this area. Showing lovely clean red and blue fruit with hints of spice this is a perfect everyday food red that is ready to drink.
