Haut-Bages-Averous was the second wine label for Chateau Lynch Bages until the 2000s when the property changed the name to Echo de Lynch Bages.

A genuine bargain for lover's of fine old claret. The second label of 5th Growth Lynch Bages, this is wonderfully savory on the nose with notes of cedar and leather. Some of this is evident on the palate as well but paired with deliciously sweet red fruits, red currant and sour cherry notes. There is a freshness here with lively acidity that is typical of the '88 vintage. Affordable mature Bordeaux. Pair this with your favorite cut of beef - NY, ribeye, hanger steak or filet. A match made in heaven.

You know you can look to us for Bordeaux bargains, but this beats all. I love the vibrancy and strength showing in this wine, defying its age. The elegant nose is loaded with cigar box, cedar, eucalyptus and cassis, the palate is both full and focused, with great structure and mellow game and fruit notes, and the finish leaves nothing to be desired with a long, spice-laden close. If you love aged Bordeaux as much as we do, this is a perfect bottle to load up on.

Wow! A perfectly-aged, ready to drink 29 year-old Bordeaux for only $54.99? It doesn't get any better than this. Lynch-Bages is one of the greatest Chateaus in all of Bordeaux and their second wine Haut Bages Averous has been an under-the-radar Bordeaux aficionado's go to wine while their Lynch bages slumbers away in their cellars. A knock-out nose of sweet red cherry, spice box and subtle tertiary notes this gorgeous Bordeaux is drinking beautifully. Perfect balance, dark chocolate and mocha notes with fine tannins and good acidity make this a must-have wine. If you didn't cellar enough Bordeaux fret not! The 1988 Haut Bages Averous is in its ideal drinking window.

This is the mature Bordeaux deal of 2017 at K&L, so hopefully those of you already planning your holiday parties haven't already blown through your wine budget. Haut Bages Averous was the second label of Pauillac powerhouse Chateau Lynch-Bages until the property changed it over to the Echo de Lynch-Bages after the turn of the century. 1988 is part of the famed 88/89/90 trio of successive successes (say that three times fast) and I'm always on the lookout for 88's specifically because they're usually priced more fairly than the more heavily-hyped 89 and 90 harvests. Let me tell you, straight up: we opened another bottle of the 88 Haut Bages Averous at the store this weekend and the wine was absolutely PERFECT!!! I had to do a bit of digging to get the cork out, but once I managed to break through the wine was immaculate. There was still plenty of fruit, sweet cassis notes with graphite, bolstered by licorice, soy, and earth on the nose. At 12.5%, the wine is everything us old school Bordeaux fans appreciate, but there's still enough freshness for newcomers to mature claret to wrap their heads around. More importantly, the 88 Haut Bages Averous is affordable, bolstering even more my affinity for second wines. There hasn't been anything this good for around fifty bucks in our Bordeaux library department all year, and I haven't seen anything on the docket that could best it before the year is up. With the plethora of drinking opportunities still on the calendar, I don't imagine a case being enough. I'm bringing this to Thanksgiving dinner, my wife's birthday, my birthday, Christmas, New Year's eve, and any other party where someone's willing to grill me a steak. This is well-priced, perfectly-aged, somewhat-collectable Bordeaux from one of the region's top producers, from a great vintage, drinking perfectly right out of the bottle. It doesn't get much better than this from a wine merchant's perspective.

I have never loved the name "Haut Bages Averous" as the second wine of Lynch Bages, but I have always loved this vintage of the wine. Almost thirty years old and still going strong thanks to the great acidity of this vintage. The 1988s took a long time to come around, but most of the north Medoc wines are showing their true colors right now. Black cherry and cedar flavors with some pencil lead aromas. And it was #81 of Top 100 Wines of 1991 in the Wine Spectator. I'd recommend buying a case or more if you're able.

At nearly 30 years old, this wine drinks superbly! Plenty of the typical notes one would expect of a wine this age - earth, leather, dusty cherry and some cedar, but it holds together extremely well. Decant this for about an hour, (or so) and this lovely, lively, mineral driven, iron hinted, beauty, really shows off nicely.

The 1988 Haut Bages Averous has really come around and is showing beautifully as a mature Bordeaux now. Lovely sweet cherried fruit mingling with notes of leather and sous bois cry out for a roasted rack of lamb. The fine integrated tannins and sweet finish with lovely graphite and cedar notes. Not surprisingly Lynch Bages pulled out a great success with their second wine in 1988, a lovely classic Pauillac at a great price.

One of the best deals in aged Bordeaux right now! This is what Lynch Bages used to call its second label, before the switched it to l’Echo de Lynch Bages in 2008. This has deep cherry notes, a little bit of game, and leather seamlessly integrated underneath soft tannins. This is one wine to look forward to on Steak and Claret night!
