K&L Notes

In the heart of Anjou lies the Baumard property, which has been in the family since 1634. Widely regarded as one of the Loire Valley's great producers, they are masters of Quarts de Chaume, Coteaux du Layon and of course Savennières. The estate is run by Florent Baumard following organic principles. Savennières is a tiny appellation covering just 200 acres all planted to Chenin Blanc. The soil is primarily schist, which gives the wines of Savennières their unique crackle of energy and honeyed texture. The AOP Savennières is fermented all in stainless steel tank and spends about 9 months on the lees before bottling.

Savennieres arguably has some of the greatest sites for Chenin Blanc production. The mixed conglomerate soils of schist and sandstone give a crackle of energy to the wines that you don't find in the other areas. Baumard is one of the region's most iconic producers, probably best known from their amazing Quarts de Chaumes dessert wine from the neighboring region, but they equally excel at Savennieres production. The appellation wine is rich with oily minerality, roasted pear, white flowers and membrillo notes. It is long and silky on the palate but has that hallmark spark that keeps the thread of minerality and richness all in focus. Treat this wine as though it were a Premier Cru Burgundy and serve it with those kinds of foods. And as with great Burgundy, feel free to put a few bottles down. I've had the privilege to taste a few older Savennieres over the years, and they are some of the most deeply complex dry whites to come from the Loire.

Whenever I'm buying a white wine, I'm usually looking for something to pair with oysters or a nice rotisserie chicken, mainly from California Chicken Cafe (living so close to one is a true blessing for me) but other times I'm also just looking for a nice sipper to enjoy on a hot summer day. Luckily this chenin blanc from Domaine Des Baumard covers all these things for me. With little notes of honey, mellow acid and solid minerality, this bottle is absolutely brilliant. This bottle will definitely be a regular in my fridge at home.

Savennieres is a wine that will reward patience and time with a beautifully aged Chenin Blanc. But only if you can keep your hands off of it! The wines from Domaine Des Baumard are some of the finest examples of Savennieres that you could open now though, if you truly can't help yourself! A slightly round texture on the palate helps mitigate the zippy acidity. The estate is run according to organic principles, but is not certified organic and Florent Baumard believes in using as little intervention as possible in both the vineyard and cellar. With notes of Bosc pear, honeycomb candy and hay, this stunner will only get better with time and can cellar for the next 2-3 decades. If you can wait, that is!
