K&L Notes

It's unusual to see Syrah-led blends coming out of the southern Rhône but this has become one of the signature wines of prestigious Gigondas producer Château de Saint Cosme. The fruit comes from the Vinsobres appellation in the northern part of the southern Rhone and the terraces of the Villefranchian subregion on the Gard side of the Rhône River. Imbued with the full flavor and richness that Syrah provides and from this exceptional 2016 vintage, you can't go wrong with this pleasing and intense French red.

While I tasted this recently I was immediately reminded why the arrival of this wine is always eagerly anticipated. It's a tremendous value and delivers even in lesser vintages. St Cosme's 2016 offers some impressive concentration and surprising assertive tannins that are enveloped by mouth-filling black fruit. This one hundred percent Syrah is the ideal foil for lamb and most certainly shines with meats, firm aged cheeses and heartier fare.

Writing about this historic winery, with its seemingly imperishable 12th century Romanesque chapel rising heavenwards above the vines, always evokes a sense of timelessness and immutability. And every wine produced here, from their imposing single vineyard Gigondas bottlings to the expressive, super-value Cotes du Rhones, capture both the unique terroir and character of this estate. Aged entirely in tank, yields were lower than the superb 2015 vintage, promising even more concentrated Syrah fruit, with high-toned aromas of black cherry, raspberry and red plum, enveloping a lush palate of blackcurrant, truffle, sweet tobacco and licorice. Fine acidity holds everything in place. A ravishing Rhone bargain, I expect this delectable Syrah to take wing!

Slightly unusual for a Cotes-du-Rhone, the Saint Cosme is 100% Syrah. Despite the fact it is sourced from the Southern Rhone commune of Vinsobres, it is a tremendous value for anyone who loves Northern Rhone wines, but not their prices. The nose expresses depth, with blackberries and cranberries. Nicely concentrated with rustic tannins this is an old-school wine that tastes unmistakably like the old world. On the palate there are brambles, dark black fruits, plums, yet I would put this in the off-fruity camp. Absolutely traditional and totally classic.
