Always a subtle and elegant red, the 2015 Garnacha de Viña Bonita is no exception. This pure Garnacha is named after a plot of very old vines planted in 1929 on very shallow and compact granite soils at 735 meters altitude. It fermented with full clusters an indigenous yeasts in oak vats for some 70 days and matured in used, well-seasoned and neutral oak barrels for one year; it was then kept through the following winter in stainless steel before bottling. This is a very shallow vineyard that suffered a lot in a warm and dry year like 2015, yet the wine managed to keep its poise and elegance. It didn't show any fatigue for the recent bottling (it had been bottled three weeks before I tasted it). The palate shows elegance and refinement, with a backbone of granite minerality that lifts it up. Only 1,000 bottles were produced in 2015 as they discarded some grapes to the Navaherreros bottling.
