K&L Notes

Entirely sourced from Edna Valley in San Luis Obispo County, Fossil Point is named for the headland area along the rugged coastline. The marine breezes have a distinct influence on the Edna Valley terroir that is itself uplifted, ancient sea floor. The Pinot Noir grapes grow in small clusters and Fossil Point vinifies traditionally in small lots before the wine is aged in neutral and once-used French oak barrels.

One of the best party pinots in the store, Fossil Point easy beats its price point in terms of quality and is one of my favorite under $20 bottles in the store. This wine’s got a great red fruit to start that opens up to earthy notes that intensify if you give it some time to breath. A bigger body Pinot, Fossil Point great to bring to a friend’s place or just enjoy at home with dinner.

I revisted this wine recently and I can still confidently state this is the best under $20 California Pinot Noir in the store. Very flavorful and brimming with black cherry and earth, there's a great balance of acidity and an ever-so-slight touch of oak that is really well integrated. Not over done, this is a fresh, clean and straight-forward wine that will appeal to everybody. Impress your guests with this delicious value at your Thanksgiving dinner this year!

Crafted from cool climate, hand harvested, coastal Pinot Noir planted in calcareous soil, this wine is an immense value. The winemakers at Fossil Point are dedicated to environmental sustainability, and are part of the Central Coast AVA's Sustainability In Practice program, or SIP. Each sip of this wine is better than the next, with notes of bright bing and black cherry and subtle spice, almost impossibly prolonged with a briny, unique minerality. For those who typically like their Pinot on the lighter side, this is for you, as it is beautifully complex, but compellingly unencumbered.

Once again this value bottling rises well above its humble price point and provides a delicious and affordable choice for Pinot Noir lovers. This starts out with gentle earthy notes, bright cherry fruit, spice and a generous texture from the neutral oak. This is sweet and lively with very fine tannins on the finish and a lot of personality.
