This Newton underlines the finesse and tension of the 2014 vintage in Napa with a full to medium body, ultra-fine tannins and a bright and energetic finish. Plenty of subtle blackcurrant, tobacco and forest-floor undertones. Drink or hold.
A blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Merlot, Newton’s 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Unfiltered has a dense ruby/purple color, a beautiful nose of blackcurrants, licorice, camphor and incense. There’s some spice box and subtle background oak as well. It is medium to full-bodied, elegant, and like most of Newton’s wines, seems to represent a beautiful crossover between the elegance and finesse of a great Bordeaux and the ripeness, power and exuberance of a Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink it over the next 20+ years. (RP)
A primary bouquet of crushed plum, smoke and pencil shavings, framed by oak vanillin, introduces a firm but fine-grained palate with lovely acidity and depth. The talented Robert Man is really transforming Newton. (WK)
Tasted blind. Lustrous crimson. Luscious and well composed and balanced and complete on the nose. Sweet and flattering and lightly floral though there is power underneath. Pretty glorious. Fruit almost overwhelms tannin – but tannin dominated eventually. Very well made. Long. Bordeaux? 18+/20 points. (JR)
Newton's 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Unfiltered is a solid, tasty wine to drink now and over the next handful of years, while the flavors remain fresh and vibrant throughout. Sweet red cherry, floral and spice overtones are nicely delineated. (AG)
