Tasting Notes

Our third vintage of this direct import Albariño, this wine shows everything we like in the grape: hints of lemongrass, lively stone fruit, and a brisk, saline-tinged palate. Located in the sub-zone of Condado do Tea, where the days are a bit warmer and evenings are slightly cooler, there is a wonderful mid-palate presence to complement the typically lean and mineral qualities of Albariño. A classic with any shellfish, especially Dungeness crab!

I love Albarino but all of my favorites typically sell for around $25. I hadn't been able to find one under $20 that had the kind of typicity I was looking for until Joe Manekin, our Spanish buyer, brought in the Adegas Valtea Albarino. Wow! It has all of the wonderfully mineral, almost saline quality I love, lively acidity and fresh stone fruit character I prize. Unquestionably our best value in an Albarino, one of our best Spanish whites, and quite possibly, one of the best white wines in the store regardless of region.

This is the third vintage of Albariño we’ve brought in from our Direct Import partner Adegas Valtea. Stylistically, they strike a nice balance between being slightly rounder than typical Albariño while still maintaining that signature coastal climate influenced sea spray quality and elevated acidity. Citrus and perfumed aromatics on the nose. On the palate, hints of lemongrass, lively stone fruit, and a brisk, saline tinged palate. This wine is crisp, tangy and bright, with an abundance of mineral notes. A great choice for seafood dishes, especially shellfish

I love it when my favorite example of an entire category is so inexpensive! The 2016 Valtea is my favorite Albarino that I have had in a long time. Not only does it have the generous, perfumed aromatics of the best Viognier, it is also as racy and lively as the best of Sauvignon Blanc! If you like clean, long finishing white untouched by oak, this is a great thing to try.

One of my favorite producers from Rias Baixas is a smaller winery called Adegas Valtea. Their Albarino comes from a vineyard slightly more inland than the bigger producers, but still very much influenced by the coastal climate. This wine is crisp, tangy and bright, with plenty of mineral notes and some pretty citrus aromatics. Of course, this is a natural partner to seafood, and works well also with appetizers and cured meats.
