The 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Amapola Estate Vineyard is out of this world, a profound example and one of the all-time great Cabernet Sauvignons from Dick Arrowood. (Keep in mind, I tend to underrate these wines, based on how this retrospective tasting turned out.) This wine offers up loads of new saddle leather, broad blackberry and blackcurrant fruit as well as licorice, forest floor and floral notes. It has a beautiful texture, full body, and sweet, well-integrated tannin and acidity. This is a stunner, and for my taste, among the three greatest Amapola Cabernet Sauvignons to date (which also include the 2005 and 2010). However, I look forward to what he has done in 2012 and 2013. 2015-2035 (RP)
Inky purple. Complex aromas of dried cherry, licorice, tobacco and aged beef, plus a subtle smoky nuance. Sappy and creamy in texture, offering intense dark fruit flavors that gain power and spiciness with aeration. Shows bitter cherry pit and smoked meat notes on the back end, finishing with very good breadth and sweetness. (JR)
